Timer & Stopwatch
Set countdown timers with alarm or track time with lap splits. Press Space to start/stop.
Keyboard: Space start/stop · L lap (stopwatch) · R reset
How to Use the Timer & Stopwatch
- Choose your mode — Click the Timer tab for countdown mode or the Stopwatch tab for elapsed time mode.
- Set your time (timer) or start (stopwatch) — For timer: enter hours, minutes, and seconds, then click Start. For stopwatch: click Start to begin counting up.
- Use keyboard shortcuts — Press Space to start/stop, L to record a lap in stopwatch mode, and R to reset.
How the Timer Works
The countdown timer uses JavaScript's setInterval() function to update the display every 50 milliseconds. It calculates remaining time by subtracting the elapsed milliseconds from the original duration. When the countdown reaches zero, the Web Audio API generates an alarm sound using an oscillator at 800 Hz, repeated 10 times with 600ms intervals.
The stopwatch uses the same interval approach but counts upward. Lap times are recorded by capturing the current elapsed time and calculating the difference from the previous lap. Both modes continue running even when you switch browser tabs, though the alarm sound may be suppressed by some browsers for background tabs.
Common Use Cases
- Cooking and baking — Set a countdown timer for recipes. The alarm sounds when time is up, even if you are in another tab.
- Workout intervals — Use the stopwatch with lap tracking for HIIT, tabata, or running interval training.
- Productivity — Use the Pomodoro technique: 25-minute work sessions followed by 5-minute breaks.
- Meeting timing — Track elapsed time during presentations, interviews, or speaking practice.
Did You Know?
The Pomodoro Technique, invented by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, uses 25-minute focused work intervals separated by short breaks. Research shows this method can improve focus and reduce mental fatigue. Set this timer to 25 minutes, work until the alarm sounds, then take a 5-minute break. After four cycles, take a longer 15-30 minute break.
Pomodoro Technique
The most popular time management method for focused work. Set this timer to 25 minutes and follow the cycle below.
| Phase | Duration | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Focus Session | 25 min | Deep work on a single task. No interruptions, no phone, no email. |
| Short Break | 5 min | Stand up, stretch, get water. Step away from the screen. |
| Focus Session | 25 min | Continue or start a new task. Maintain focus. |
| Short Break | 5 min | Quick rest. Repeat focus + break cycle. |
| Long Break (after 4 cycles) | 15-30 min | Full mental reset. Walk, eat, rest. Then start a new set of 4. |
Common Timer Uses
Recommended timer durations for popular activities.
| Activity | Recommended Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Exercise (HIIT) | 30 sec on / 10 sec rest | Use stopwatch with laps for interval tracking |
| Cooking (pasta) | 8-12 min | Set timer, keep the tab open. Alarm plays when done. |
| Meditation | 10-20 min | Set a gentle alarm. Close eyes; the sound signals the end. |
| Presentation practice | 5-15 min | Use stopwatch to track actual vs planned duration |
| Power nap | 15-20 min | Keep volume on. Alarm wakes you without oversleeping. |
| Stretching | 5-10 min | Set timer, follow a routine. Alarm keeps you on schedule. |
Time Management Methods
Popular productivity systems you can implement with this timer and stopwatch.
| Method | How It Works | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Pomodoro | 25 min focus, 5 min break. 4 cycles then 15-30 min long break. | Writers, developers, students studying for exams |
| 52-17 Method | 52 min of focused work followed by 17 min of rest. No strict cycle count. | Tasks requiring deeper concentration, creative work |
| Timeboxing | Assign a fixed time box to each task. Work only until the timer ends, then move on. | Project management, preventing perfectionism, multitasking |
| Ultradian Sprint | 90 min focused work, 20-30 min rest. Based on natural energy cycles. | Deep creative work, writing, programming sprints |
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set a timer online?
Enter the hours, minutes, and seconds in the input fields, then click Start. The countdown begins immediately. When the timer reaches zero, an alarm sound plays and the card flashes to alert you.
Does the timer work if I switch browser tabs?
Yes. The timer uses JavaScript intervals that continue running even when you switch tabs. The browser title updates to show the remaining time, so you can glance at the tab to check. However, the alarm sound may not play if the tab is in the background in some browsers.
What keyboard shortcuts are available?
Space starts or stops the timer/stopwatch. L records a lap in stopwatch mode. R resets the current mode. These shortcuts work when no input field is focused.
How does the stopwatch lap feature work?
While the stopwatch is running, click Lap (or press L) to record the current time. Each lap shows the split time (total elapsed) and the difference from the previous lap. This is useful for timing intervals, workouts, or performance benchmarks.
Can I use this timer for cooking or workouts?
Yes. Set the hours, minutes, and seconds, then click Start. The alarm will sound when time is up. For cooking, keep the browser tab open and audible. For workouts, the stopwatch with lap tracking is ideal for interval training.
